As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, many people are searching for things to brighten their day or to take their mind off of the news. According to a new study conducted by the British Academy of Sound Therapy, we should be turning on the music. Their research showed that it takes less than 10 minutes for music to make us happy.
The British Academy of Sound Therapy watched 7,500 participants to see how long it would take the music to have a therapeutic effect. The results found that if you are feeling stressed or sad, it only takes music 13 minutes to lighten your mood and if you are already feeling “okay”, you only need 9 minutes of music to feel happier.
Of course, they looked into different types of music for different therapeutic effects. Slow tempo, simple melody, and no lyrics will help your mind and body relax. What if you want to feel happy and upbeat? Go with a driving rhythm, fast tempo, and happy lyrics.
It seems like most of us already follow these ideas because when asked, 89% percent of those asked in the study said they listen to music for their own personal well-being. Over 80% use music to boost happiness. Nearly 50% have used music to process negative emotions and just over 30% have used music to make concentration better!
