Sexual Abuse

Episode Overview:

Sexual abuse against children happens globally, across all countries and social groups.  It is described as any sexual activity or contact with a child or teen.  According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 5 women and 1 in 13 men reported they were sexually abused as a child.  However the true magnitude of sexual violence is hidden because of stigma, fear, shame and lack of trust in authorities. In this episode, Dr. Nandi interviews two women who were sexually abused by family members and a neighbor.  Dr. Nandi discusses the warning signs of abuse and what the difference is between a pedophile and a child molester.

Partha’s RX:

  1. The best way to protect a child is by talking to them about personal body safety. Be involved, ask questions and listen. Get to know the people in their life.

  2. By withholding sexual abuse information from your child, they may not know what to do if it happens to them. Start talking with your child as early as 2 years old.

  3. Biological markers for pedophilila indicates that being sexually attracted to children is NOT a choice. It is near impossible for pedaphiles to seek help because most therapists have to obey mandatory reporting laws. Virtuous Pedophiles is an anonymous online group where pedophiles can go for resources and help.

  4. If you are struggling with the impact of sexual abuse, seek therapy. Or join After Silence, an online support group for survivors.
